In the morning I’m
approached by a woman from the tent next to me.
She is curious about
my tent and other equipment. Always fun to share experiences.
A sunny day again.
The trail goes up a bit and then starts to descend towards Kilpisjärvi. Not
much wind. Birds do their bird thing. Rocks and more rocks. Water between the
rocks. Plants appear again. Hikers going the opposite direction are sweating
profusely.
The Saarijärvi hut is
closed, the new hut is 200 meters away. In the direction I just came from. No
going back. I have a snack right there on a rock.
11 km more to go,
crossing through a small stretch of Norway. Possibly they haven’t noticed. The
Norwegians.
Saana, Sami holy
mountain, dominates the landscape. As it possibly dominates the ecosystem,
affecting light and shadow, wind, meltwater, and creating height gradient with
different habitats. Maybe this is what “holy” means.
It’s very hot in
Kilpisjärvi. The asphalt feels like a stove. Shower, resupply, laundry, dinner.
It feels difficult to keep my balance without the backpack.
21.9 km today, about
one fourth of the total is done.
